Affected Teaching

This verse has taken a double hit. First, the Gnostics remove the word “our” and replaced it with “the.” The word “our” in the Greek is in the Genitive case which is the case of possession. The Apostle Paul is speaking about God the Father and then goes on to state that He is the God and Father of “our” Lord Jesus Christ. The word “our” would reveal a double possession. Since God is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, this would make Him our Father also. It creates a family connection between the believer, God the Father, and God the Son. By replacing the word “our” with “the” it removes the family connection we have with the Father and the Son. This is a great encouraging truth for the believer. When we become saved, we are taken into the Family of God. (Eph 1:3-5 KJV) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: {4} According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: {5} Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, The second hit this verse took is the divine title of the Lord Jesus which is “Christ.” The Gnostics did not believe Christ was God manifest in the flesh, so they have removed many references to Jesus being Christ. The modern versions show how inferior they are by belittling the Lord Jesus Christ and removing encouragement for the true believer.
