Genesis 5:1-16

Ge 5:1

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

Chapter five gives us the line down to Noah.  These are the generations of Adam from the time that God created him in his image or likeness.  That is an important part of the verse since God gives a second reference to this in verse 3.

Ge 5:2

Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

God only created two sexes and they are male and female.  There is no such thing as transgender as that is a satanic idea which basically states that God made a mistake creating a person a man when he should be a woman or a woman when she should be a man.  The idea that there is more than one gender is a satanically deceptive concept.  God called Adam and Eve, Adam, which means “mankind or human being” on the day they were created.  The name “Adam” does not mean specifically a male but is a generic term for both sexes.

Ge 5:3

And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:

While Adam was created in the likeness of God which was in totally purity and holiness, notice that his son Seth was made in the image of Adam.  Seth was created in the likeness of Adam which means he was no longer in the full likeness of God because Seth now has the sin nature dwelling in him which he received from his father Adam.  So every human being since then is created in the image of Adam.  We still have the intelligence and some of the attributes of God such as care, love, compassion, etc. but added to those is the sin nature.   This gives us understanding as to the doctrine of Total Depravity which teaches that every aspect of man has been tainted by sin, while we can show love yet we can show hatred for someone even if it is undeserved.  Adam lived here a total of one hundred and thirty years and then he begat Seth.  Now there are many who try to use these timelines to try and figure out the day of Christ’s return but they always fail.  The 130 years, is it from the time Adam was created or was it from the time that Adam sinned since before he sinned, time was not a factor?  If it was from the time he sinned, then how long did Adam live in purity and holiness from the time of creation till he sinned?  Questions like these need to be answered if one is going to attempt to come to any dates and those two initial time periods yield no answers which means the starting point is already in question.

Ge 5:4

And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

After Adam had begotten Seth, he lived a total of eight hundred years which means his total life was 930 years.  It must be noted that the word begotten or begat may also refer to sons, grandsons, or someone well into the future.

Ge 5:5

And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

Adam lived 930 years and then died which was the first death which was pronounced upon Adam and Eve in the garden.  The second death was eternal damnation which Cain suffered since he was still called “that wicked one” in the New Testament.

Ge 5:6

And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos:

Then Seth had lived 105 years an begat Enos whose name means “man is his frailty.”

Ge 5:7

And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters:

Then Seth lived 807 years after the birth of Enos and he begat other sons and daughters.  If you notice out of that clan only Enos is specifically mentioned because he was in the Messianic line.

Ge 5:8

And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.

All the days of Seth were 912 years and he died.

Ge 5:9

And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:

Enos had lived ninety years and begat Cainan whose name means “acquisition.”

Ge 5:10

And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:

Then after Cainan was born, Enos lived 815 years and begat other sons and daughters.

Ge 5:11

And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

Enos lived a total of 905 years and then he died.

Ge 5:12

And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel:

Then Cainan lived seventy years and he begat Mahalaleel whose name means “praise of God or God of Splendor.”

Ge 5:13

And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters:

Then Cainan lived 840 years after he begat Mahalaleel and gave birth to other sons and daughters.  We can begin to see how the earth was now being populated as these families continue to grow.

Ge 5:14

And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.

Cainan lived a total of 910 years and then he died.

Ge 5:15

And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared:

Mahalaleel lived sixty five years and begat Jared whose name means “descending or he that descends.”

Ge 5:16

And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters:

Mahalaleel lived after the birth of Jared for 830 years and he too begat sons and daughters.
