Affected Teaching
Here is a case where the modern versions have softened the meaning of this verse. In this chapter, Paul is dealing with the church at Corinth for not disciplining a man who has committed fornication with his father’s wife. The specific charge against this man is fornication. The modern versions changed it to “sexual immorality” which can have a wide meaning but Paul is being specific about the church as he speaks of fornication in verses 9, 10, and 11. Sexual immorality does not necessarily mean a person having sex with someone who is not their spouse but can have a number of meanings such as suggestive speech, being nude, or whatever. In Corinth, there was a number of pagan temples which featured prostitution as a part of their religion and the Bible calls it fornication. There is no difference between having sex with a prostitute or another woman who is not a spouse since both are specifically considered fornication. One of the main features of the modern versions is that they reduce the severity of sin, as in this case.
