Daniel 9:26

Language and Affected Teaching
The word behind “Messiah” is “mãshĩach” which carries with it the meaning of “anointed” so why did the King James translators translate it “Messiah” in Daniel 9:25 & 26 when they translated it “anointed” in every other verse in the Old Testament?  It is translated “anointed” 37 times and “Messiah” 2 times.
 
{25} Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.  {26} And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.  (Daniel 9:25-26)
 
First we will look at how the word “mãshĩach” is used in other verses:
 
If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering.  (Leviticus 4:3)
 
And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.  (1 Samuel 24:6)
 
Here we have two uses of the word “mãshĩach” where they are translated “anointed.”  In Leviticus 4:3 we see that the temple priests were anointed to that position.  In 1 Samuel 24:6 we read David refusing to raise his hand against Saul to kill him because he sees Saul as the anointed of the Lord even though there was no evidence that Saul was ever saved.  When the word “anointed” was used in these contexts they are speaking about human men.  When we come to Daniel 9:25-26, we read a different context.  Those verses are a prophecy of the Lord Jesus Christ and his crucifixion.  They do not have in view a mere man but Christ himself and that is why the King James translators used the word “Messiah” because it prophesied the events of when Christ would be cut off for the Elect of God.  That is the reason they did not use “anointed” because it would not show a distinction between Christ and ordinary men.  If they would have used the term “anointed” then who would that anointed one be?  There must be a distinction and the word “Messiah” gives us that distinction and a specific focus on the right person.
 
In Daniel 9:26, many of the modern versions do the same thing the Jehovah’s Witnesses Bible does in John 1:1.  (NWT)  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god. (John 1:1)  Notice that the New World Translation (NWT) makes Jesus “a” god (small g).  This means there are other gods according to the NWT.  In Daniel 9:26, the modern versions make the same egregious error by equating Christ with mere men bringing him down from his God status.  The CEB, ESV, LEB, NABRE, NET, NRSV, and RSV all use the word “an anointed” thus taking the specific reference to Christ and removing it to make him one among many ordinary men.  This is a blatant attack upon the Lord Jesus Christ. 
 
Then the modern versions do not stop there, let us look at some of the other serious defects in the modern versions concerning Daniel 9:26.
 
Many of them use the term “and shall have nothing.”  When the Lord Jesus Christ went to the cross he did not have “nothing” but the total opposite.  When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.  (John 19:30)  Once he died on the cross, all the Elect became sealed and the salvation plan of God was completed and all that took place after that was God applying salvation to his Elect and giving them to the Lord Jesus Christ.  All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.  (John 6:37)  So contrary to the modern versions, Christ received an entire kingdom of believers after he died.
 
The phrase “but not for himself” has been removed in the modern versions and replaced with “and shall have nothing” which is an incorrect rendering of the Hebrew, as usual.  The Messiah was not be cut off for himself but for the body of believers which the Father would give to him until the last one named would be saved.  This biblical truth was eliminated from the modern versions including the coveted ESV used by so many Christians.

(ERV) “the chosen one will be killed. He will be gone”
(The Message)  “the Anointed Leader will be killed—the end of him.”
 
Look at the phrases above from Daniel 9:26.  All three speak of Christ as being totally “eliminated, gone, and ended.”  How ridiculous, do they not realize that Christ was not eliminated, gone, or ended because he was resurrected three days later and lives today which totally contradicts the terms “eliminated” and “end.”  The crucifixion was just the beginning as we know there is a Christian witness in every country in the world at present, even if it is underground.  These modern versions are horrible and should be avoided by every Christian.
