Ezra 2:1-14

EZRA 2:1

Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;

In ancient Israel, the lineage of each family was very important and each family had to be in the register as a proof that they were of the legitimate house of Israel.  And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein, (Nehemiah 7:5)  Many of the family heads had died in Babylon but their family lines continued on and their family lines are given in the next few verses as the returnees to Jerusalem and Judah and the cities which they were taken from.

Some totals between Ezra and Nehemiah are different.  This is not a discrepancy but on the return some stated they would go but did not and some had died.  Keep in mind that the tally was of those who were taken to Babylon 70 years ago and now returning to Judah, so some numbers in the registry will be different than the actual amount of returnees per family.  Some families gained in number and some declined.
