- John 8:41-45
-
- John 8:41 (KJB)
- Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of
fornication; we have one Father, even God.
-
- Jesus once again states that they do the deeds of their father and up to
this point Jesus has not identified who their father was. They had surmised
that Jesus was speaking about Abraham and here they elevated themselves to
saying that they have only one Father and that is God. They claimed that
they were legitimate children of God by stating that they were not born of
fornication. By making that reference, they may have been implying that
Jesus was born of fornication or that they were the true children of God
because they had the law given to them in the past. Genealogies were big to
the Jews and they probably also implied that they could check their lineage
and prove that they were legitimate descendants of Abraham. They are relying
on the relationship that God had with Israel under people like David,
Solomon, Moses and believed that since they received the law, that made them
the legitimate children of God.
-
- John 8:42 (KJB)
- Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I
proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
-
- Here Jesus gives them a reality because normally within a family there
is love. If they were truly the children of God, then they would not seek to
kill Him, instead they would love Him. Jesus then goes on to restate the
fact that He came from God and did not come on His own. It was God the
Father who sent Him into the world. If they were truly God’s children, then
they would have been very cognizant of this fact and would have welcomed Him
and loved Him.
-
- John 8:43 (KJB)
- Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot
hear my word.
-
- Understand - Know, have insight, or perceive
- Hear - Hear with understanding
-
- Jesus asks a simple question and then proceeds to answer it. He asks
them why do they not understand the things which He is saying? Then He gives
the answer. It is because they cannot hear Him, not physical hearing, but
spiritual hearing. They are unsaved and do not have the ability to
understand spiritual things.
(1 Cor 2:14
KJV) But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for
they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they
are spiritually discerned. They had thought that
their education level would give them all the insight they had needed and no
one could teach them a thing and this is the problem with those who serve
the education god. Too many think they have superlative knowledge and that
everyone else is beneath them. These Jews could hear the words being spoken
but because of the fact they were unsaved could not understand the meanings.
-
- John 8:44 (KJB)
- Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye
will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,
because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his
own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
-
- Here Jesus identifies who their father really is and it is Satan. Up to
this point the Jews had been smug in believing that their father was Abraham
and God but Jesus now tells them straight out that their father is the
Devil. They thought that they were in the Kingdom of God and that they were
serving God but Jesus quickly puts that deception to rest. The Jews desire
to kill Jesus and Satan was a murderer from the beginning so the Jews are in
keeping with methods of Satan. Satan would love to kill Jesus and now he has
a group who is willing to do his work. The Pharisees have not been abiding
in the truth as they have embellished their own traditions as it pleased
them. Since Satan did not abide in the truth, these Pharisees are not
abiding in the truth. So here we have agreement with Satan in two areas,
murder and lust. Then the third area which the Jews had agreement with Satan
was in the area of lies. They had made lies about Jesus for the purpose of
trying to trap Him to get Him executed. So on three fronts the leaders of
Israel had agreed with Satan, they are lies, murder, and lust. This is why
Jesus could say they were of their father the devil because there is no
place in the Kingdom of God for these types of activities.
(Rev 22:15 KJV) For without are dogs,
and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever
loveth and maketh a lie. Money was an idol to these leaders as they craved
to live life in luxury.
-
- John 8:45 (KJB)
- And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
-
- Jesus tells them that He tells them the truth and they believe it not
and that is because they are of the kingdom of Satan and do not have the
spiritual ability to believe Jesus because they are unregenerate and
reprobate. They wanted a Messiah who would conform to their image and not
one who was more concerned with spiritual things. They wanted someone to
physically throw off the yoke of Rome, yet they claimed they were not in
bondage to anyone. If they could find such a person who could remove Rome,
then their positions in Israel would be much higher and lucrative, they knew
it and that is why they did not want Jesus because He did not concern
Himself with political ambitions. Jesus spoke much of love but the Jews
wanted position and authority and accompanying wealth.
