And Jesus
answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and
blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
(Matthew 16:17) As we can see in Matthew 16:17 that Simon is the son of
Jona (bar-jona). Yet, many of the
modern versions that we see above and probably many more list his name as “son
of John” in John 1:42 Here is another
case of inconsistency in the modern versions.
I will use the ESV as an example
(John 1:42
ESV)
He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of
John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
(Matthew
16:17 ESV)
And
Jesus answered him, “Blessed
are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but
my Father who is in heaven.
In John 1:42 Peter is called the “son of John” and in Matthew 16:17 he is called
“son of Jonah (Bar-Jonah).
Every Modern version states in Matthew 16:17 that it is “Simon Bar-Jona”
Son of Jonah and not John. So which
one is it? According to the ESV,
Peter had two dads which would make the sodomite community very happy.
Either he was the son of Jonah or he was the son of John!
This is another example of the confusion which is found in the modern
versions. Below is a good example
of the continuity found in the King James Bible which does not engender
confusion.
(John 1:42 KJB) And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said,
Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by
interpretation, A stone.
(Matthew 16:17 KJB) And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
