Judges 13:21-25

Judges 13:21

But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD.

Then the Lord no more appeared to Manoah and his wife once he went back to Heaven and it was during this event they knew that He was more than an angel but the Lord Himself.

Judges 13:22

And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.

Then fear struck Manoah as he turns to his wife and states that they will surely die because they saw the Lord face to face.  And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.  (Exodus 33:20, KJV)  Manoah probably had in mind this scripture which God had told to Moses that no one can see His face and live.  If we ever saw God or the Lord Jesus Christ in full glory, we would be consumed in a second but whenever the Lord made an appearance, He either changed his countenance or He qualified the viewer to be able to see and live.  Someday we will have the glory of God in our bodies in Heaven.  Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.  (1 John 3:2 KJV)

Judges 13:23

But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.

Manoah being strapped with fear had forgotten the things which had just transpired.  His wife reminded him that if the Lord wanted to kill them, He would not have accepted their burnt offering, and showed them His flight to Heaven in the fire and also the information that He gave them concerning the coming birth of their son.  If He wanted to kill them, He would have done it in a second of time as seen many times in the Scriptures such as Herod in Acts 12 or Korah and his rebellion in Numbers 16.

Judges 13:24

And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him.

Then the prophecy came to pass as Manoah’s wife bore him a son and called his name Samson.  The name “Samson” has several meanings “sun-man, distinguished, strong, his son, here the second time.”  As the child grew, the Lord had blessed him.  Probably one of the ways the Lord blessed him was with great strength.

Judges 13:25

And the Spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.

The Lord had begun to train and direct the life of Samson.  It was for the purpose of delivering the Israelites from the oppression of the Philistines.  Zorah and Eshtaol were two cities that were located in the area of Dan.  The tribe of Dan was located near the territory where the Philistines dwelt.  The two cities were probably also places of military training since Dan was the northernmost territory and was probably subject to raids by the pagan nations.  And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.  (Judges 18:11, KJV)
