Judges 6:16-20

Judges 6:16

And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

The Lord once again confirms to Gideon that He will be with Him during this time and He will grant such strength and warrior prowess to Gideon that he will triumph over the Midianites as if he and his army was facing one man.  All the men that would be with Gideon in his campaign would have the mindset as one man which would be to completely destroy the Midianites which is what will happen.  Notice the word of the Lord that He says to Gideon that “thou shalt smite” not that he may or might smite them but in God’s eyes, the battle is already won.

Judges 6:17

And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.

Now Gideon is asking the Lord that if he has found grace in His sight, that is favor or acceptance with God, then Gideon requests that a sign of confirmation be given him.  It does not necessarily have to be a miraculous sign but one that would confirm the conversation which they just had.  Gideon wanted to make sure that he was not being deceived but that what he heard was true.

Judges 6:18

Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

Then Gideon wanted to present his guest with a gift.  So he asks the Lord to remain there until he returns.  Gideon was to set the gift before the Lord.  So the Lord agreed to remain at the site until Gideon returned.  This would not have been a meat offering or any type of sacrificial offering since Gideon was not a priest and it was not the place to offer a sacrifice.

Judges 6:19

And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

Gideon had gone to the flock to bring back a kid which would probably have been a young goat and prepared it as food for the guest.  He also made cakes of unleavened flour along with some broth which would have been some kind of soup.  Gideon wanted to offer the gift of a meal to his guest.  So he prepared all the food and brought it unto his guest.

Judges 6:20

And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

The angel of God told Gideon to take the flesh and the unleavened cakes and place them upon the rock in front of them and he poured out the broth also just as David poured out the water his men brought him as a drink offering unto the Lord.  2 Samuel 23:16 (KJV)   And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.  So Gideon obeys the Lord and lays everything out.  The other alternative could have been that Gideon had poured the broth over the meat and the cakes which would still signify a type of sacrifice.
