Affected Teaching
The Holy Spirit is not in view in this verse. This is why the King James
translators did not capitalize “spirit” as they did in every other place when
referencing the holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:30 (KJV) And grieve not the holy
Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Jesus
rejoiced in his spirit when the 70 came back reporting a successful missionary
venture. Now it is true that the Holy Spirit gives the true believer joy but in
this verse the spirit of Jesus was in view. It would be like going to a Bible
conference and coming away refreshed in the “spirit.” It does not mean the Holy
Spirit is refreshed because He is the one who does the refreshing. In other
words, their successful missionary venture gave Jesus much joy. The modern
versions also changed “Jesus” to “he” thus reducing Him to a nameless character.
