Affected Teaching
The first hit this verse took is that the modern versions have replaced “Christ”
with “he.” Now neither the word Christ nor the word he is in the text which
means it is the editors who decide which word to use. The King James uses the
word “Christ” making it a specific reference to Jesus as the Christ. The word
“Christ” is a noun and the word “he” is a pronoun. The word “he” makes it a very
nebulous choice as to who Jesus is speaking about but when the King James uses
“Christ” there is no guessing as to who is in view. Using the noun Christ also
names Jesus as the Messiah. The second hit is when the modern versions omit the
word “therefore” which means that we are to look at the prior reasons given as
to why we should not go after those who claim to be Christ. “Therefore” points
us to a specific part of Scripture as our authority as to why we do not believe
these false teachers.
