Luke 2:21-25

Luke 2:21 (KJB)
And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

In keeping with the law, Joseph and Mary had Jesus circumcised on the eighth day according to the law. (Lev 12:3 KJV) And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. The name Jesus as the same name as Joshua in the Hebrew. The name means “Jehovah is salvation.” He was to be given this name as announced by the angel to Mary. (Mat 1:21 KJV) And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. This command to name the child Jesus was given to both Joseph and Mary.

Luke 2:22 (KJB)
And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

(Lev 12:6-8 KJV) And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest: {7} Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female. {8} And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

According to the Law of Moses, when a woman gives birth to a male she had a time for purifying of 41 days. She had him circumcised on the eighth day and then was to continue her purification for another thirty three days. (Lev 12:4 KJV) And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled. If you will notice in these Levitical Scriptures, there is nothing stated concerning an offering for both child and mother. The sin offering and burnt offering were specifically for the mother, not mother and child as the modern counterfeit versions of the Bible claim. They went to Jerusalem to present Jesus in the temple and have the baby circumcised.

Luke 2:23 (KJB)
(As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

(Exo 13:2 KJV) Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine. The reason they were holy unto the Lord because the firstborn took upon themselves service to the Lord. The dedication of the firstborn also reminded the Jews that God spared the firstborn of Israel when He destroyed all the firstborn of the Egyptians. Like the prophet Samuel, Jesus was given to the work of the Lord. Mary and Joseph recognized Jesus as the Messiah and dedicated Him to this work.

Luke 2:24 (KJB)
And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

(Lev 12:8 KJV) And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean. Joseph and Mary were not wealthy but poor so they had to bring an offering which was equal to their financial capabilities so they offered the two birds. Joseph had a carpentry business which probably gave him a good income but being away from it for some time probably placed a drain on their financial situation.

Luke 2:25 (KJB)
And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

Simeon had provided further confirmation that Jesus was the Messiah. Simeon was a devout Jew who was looking for the Messiah, called the comforter or consolation of Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon Simeon which gave greater credence to his words of the Messiahship of Jesus. Simeon was prophetically empowered and showed a continual devout character. He was a righteous man and devout toward God.
