Luke 2:31-35

Luke 2:31 (KJB)
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

The Scriptures had foretold that the Messiah was going to save people from all over the world and salvation would not only be limited to those in Israel. Jesus was prepared at the moment of Adam and Eve’s sin to become the Messiah. He was prophesied down through the ages that He would come and grant salvation to all His own in the world. (John 13:1 KJV) Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. The Gospel of Christ was prepared to go to the ends of the earth. (Isa 49:6 KJV) And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Luke 2:32 (KJB)
A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Here is the straight prophesy that the Gentiles in all the world are going to be recipients of the Gospel. (Isa 60:3 KJV) And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. They will be brought out of the dark world of idolatry and false teachings and brought into the light of the true Gospel. The Glory of Israel will be the fact that the Messiah came out of the lineage of the nation Israel. God gave Israel a great privilege among all the nations of the world in bringing the Messiah through them.

Luke 2:33 (KJB)
And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

Joseph and Mary knew there was something special about Jesus but it seemed they were learning more and more every day how special the lad was. When they heard the things which Simeon said, they were basically astonished at what was being spoken. In their lives, there was a progressive revelation about Jesus almost daily. The way this verse is worded is very important concerning “Joseph and His mother.” The modern versions change it to “His mother and father.” Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus. If he was, then Jesus would have had a sin nature and that cannot be.

Luke 2:34 (KJB)
And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

Simeon now ends up by blessing the family and gives a word of forewarning to Mary. Simeon now prophesies about the future ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many in Israel will reject the Lord Jesus Christ and those who do will be subject to eternal damnation. Many will be offended by Him and the leaders will grow to hate Him. Then there will be those who are going to joyfully welcome their Messiah and in receiving Him they will become saved and will be raised up to newness of life. Then Jesus will be a sign to Israel which will be spoken against or opposed. (Isa 8:18 KJV) Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion. Just as Isaiah was a sign to his generation that God was working in their midst and he was spoken against in his generation. The Lord Jesus Christ is a sign from Heaven that the kingdom of God was among them also and He would be spoken against and like Isaiah, put to death.

Luke 2:35 (KJB)
(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Here is a future prophecy that Mary is going to suffer much anguish in her soul throughout the entire ministry of the Lord Jesus. There will be the threats made by the leaders when they tried to take counsel among themselves on how to destroy Him plus all those who would oppose Him during the regular times of ministry. The greatest piercing that Mary would receive is when she would witness the execution of the Lord Jesus, from the mock trial to the crucifixion.  Then when these things take place, the true feelings for the Lord Jesus Christ will come out. There will be many who oppose Him but there will be many who love Him. One of the most obvious was Judas who betrayed Him. His thoughts were definitely revealed as all he thought of was money.
