Affected Teaching
Here Jesus is giving a teaching that those who have
forsaken all the things which they love and are familiar with for His sake, will
receive an hundredfold more in this life. The amount “hundredfold” is an open
ended number and the Lord is basically stating that the blessings of the
Christian life are without number. When the Lord speaks of forsaking family, He
is not advocating leaving without any communication with their earthly family
but He is stating that the Christian must seek the eternal family above the
earthly family and if they are the only ones saved in that family, then their
outlook on life is going to be different than the unsaved ones and their worldly
outlook must also be forsaken. If you notice in the text, the Lord also mentions
forsaking a wife which is omitted in the modern versions. This does not mean
that a man is to forsake and divorce his wife because that would be in violation
of the Scriptures. This would have two possible meanings. The first is a man
forsaking the institution of marriage, exchanging the married life for the life
in service to Christ. The second meaning would be that the husband takes on a
ministry which causes him to be separated from his wife for long periods of
time. For example, Peter was married but he left his wife at home while he
pursued ministry with the Lord which took him away from home for long periods of
time. Throughout history, there have been many gospel widows who do not see
their husbands for long periods of time. The modern versions remove that word
“wife” which also removes a great promise to those married people who become
separated from each other for long periods of time for the sake of the Gospel.
