Affected Teaching
In the King James Bible, Herod had many conversations with John and in response
to each conversation, Herod seemed to be doing some type of good work according
to the phrase “he did many things.” Maybe John was instructing him in the law of
Moses and that was why Herod had heard him gladly. The Herod clan was not Jewish
but were of Edomite ancestry and John may have been instructing him in the
Hebrew Scriptures. Herod did fear John in that he knew that John was a prophet
of God and yet he heard him gladly. The modern versions make out what John was
telling Herod was causing him to be perplexed or filled with anxiety. This would
be an oxymoron because on one hand Herod is hearing him gladly but on the other
hand he is filled with anxiety over hearing John. It does not make sense. How
could you listen to someone gladly when they cause you much anxiety?
