And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh
out of the mouth, this defileth a man. Then came his disciples, and said
unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they
heard this saying? But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly
Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind
leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into
the ditch. - Matthew 15:10-14.
2. Covetousness
And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and
they derided him. - Luke 16:14.
3. Very Careful About Outward Details.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of
mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the
law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to
leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow
a camel. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean
the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of
extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is
within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe
unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited
sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of
dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear
righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Woe
unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of
the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, And say, If we
had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with
them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto
yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. Fill
ye up then the measure of your fathers. Ye serpents, ye generation of
vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? - Matthew 23:-23-33
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that
I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this
publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And
the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto
heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I
tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other:
for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth
himself shall be exalted. - Luke 18:11-14.
4. Legalists
Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the
most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. - Acts 26:5.
5. Perversion of Scripture
Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem,
saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for
they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto
them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that
curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall
say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest
be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be
free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your
tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This
people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their
lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me,
teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. - Acts 15:1-9.
6. Self Justification Before Others:
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and
love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye
cannot serve God and mammon. And the Pharisees also, who were covetous,
heard all these things: and they derided him. And he said unto them, Ye are
they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for
that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
- Luke 16:13-15.
7. Man Glorifying Doctrines
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments
of men. - Matthew 15:9.
8. Hindrances to the Gospel of Christ:
Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he
keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do
such miracles? And there was a division among them. They say unto the blind
man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said,
He is a prophet. But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had
been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him
that had received his sight. And they asked them, saying, Is this your son,
who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? His parents answered
them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: But
by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we
know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. These words
spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed
already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put
out of the synagogue. - John 9:16-22.
9. Zealous for Proselytes:
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and
land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more
the child of hell than yourselves. - Matthew 23:15.
10. Refusal to Accept Christ's Commands:
But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast
out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. And Jesus knew their
thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is
brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall
not stand: And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how
shall then his kingdom stand? And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom
do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if
I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto
you. Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his
goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his
house. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with
me scattereth abroad. Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and
blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy
Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against
the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the
Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in
the world to come. Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else
make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his
fruit. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?
for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of
the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man
out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you,
That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof
in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy
words thou shalt be condemned. - Matthew 12:24-37.
11. Hypocrites:
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the
kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither
suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Woe unto you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make
long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Woe unto you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one
proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell
than yourselves. - Matthew 23:13-15.
12. Children of the Devil:
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of
life. The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself;
thy record is not true. - John 8:12,13.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will
do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,
because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his
own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the
truth, ye believe me not. - John 8:44,45.
