- Matthew 1:6-10
-
- Mat 1:6 (KJB)
- And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her
that had been the wife of Urias;
-
- The line of descent now goes from David unto the exile. Jesse was the
father of King David. The fact that David is called king draws attention to
the fact that the genealogy confirms the fact of the claim of Jesus to the
throne of David. Then God brings in a reminder to the people that David
fathered Solomon by Bathsheba who was the wife of Urriah the Hittite. The
fact the David sinned did not exclude him from the lineage of Jesus and the
grace of God. The Grace of God restores people and is more than sufficient
for the job.
-
- Mat 1:7 (KJB)
- And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
-
- Now we get into the part of the lineage which came through the divided
kingdom of Israel. Rehoboam ruled over the southern kingdom, that is, Judah.
Then Rehobaom fathered Abijam who became King of the southern kingdom after
Rehoboam‘s death.
(1 Ki 14:31 KJV) And Rehoboam slept with his
fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his
mother's name was Naamah an Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his
stead. Then after Abijam died, Asa became king in his
place. (1 Ki 15:8 KJV) And Abijam slept with his fathers; and they
buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead.
Asa was a good king.
-
- Mat 1:8 (KJB)
- And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;
-
- (1 Ki 15:24 KJV) And Asa slept with his fathers, and was buried with
his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoshaphat his son reigned
in his stead. After King Asa died, then his son
Jehoshaphat became king of the southern kingdom. Then when Jehoshaphat died,
his son Jehoram reigned in his stead. (1 Ki 22:50 KJV) And
Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the
city of David his father: and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.
Now the Scripture states that Jehoram had begat Uzziah (Ozias), but in this
case he was not a direct descendant. There were three kings between Jehoram
and Uzziah, and they were Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah. This shows that the
word begat can be widened to jump a generation or two, but nevertheless it
still remains within the lineage. It is stated that Uzziah was an economic
and military genius but unfortunately he had gone into the holy place to
offer incense on the altar and God struck him with leprosy and was
quarantined for the rest of his life.
-
- (2 Ki 8:24 KJV) And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with
his fathers in the city of David: and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.
-
- (2 Chr 24:1 KJV) Joash was seven years old when he began to reign,
and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Zibiah
of Beersheba.
-
- (2 Ki 14:1 KJV) In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of
Israel reigned Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah.
-
- Mat 1:9 (KJB)
- And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat
Ezekias;
-
- (2 Ki 15:32 KJV) In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah king
of Israel began Jotham the son of Uzziah king of Judah to reign.
Jotham reigned in Judah after the death of his father Uzziah. (2
Ki 15:38 KJV) And Jotham slept with his fathers, and was buried with his
fathers in the city of David his father: and Ahaz his son reigned in his
stead. Jotham had begun to reign and brought
his son to reign with him. Archaeology has uncovered the fact that at a
later time, Achaz (Ahaz) had also brought his son, Hezekiah, to the throne
to reign with him. (2 Ki 16:20 KJV) And Ahaz slept with his
fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Hezekiah
his son reigned in his stead. When Hezekiah mounted
the throne, he reinstated the full Passover celebration. The Assyrians tried
to attack during his reign but God gave deliverance.
-
- Mat 1:10 (KJB)
- And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat
Josias;
-
- Hezekiah fathered Manasseh but he turned out to be one of the most
wicked kings Judah ever had, even sacrificing his own son in the fire to a
false god.
(2 Ki 20:21 KJV) And Hezekiah slept with his fathers:
and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
Manasseh reigned a total of 55 years. (2 Ki 21:6 KJV) And he made
his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments,
and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in
the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.
Then Manasseh fathered Amon who turned out to be a wicked
king like his father. (2 Ki 21:18-20 KJV) And Manasseh slept with
his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of
Uzza: and Amon his son reigned in his stead. {19} Amon was twenty and two
years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. And
his mother's name was Meshullemeth, the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah. {20}
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father
Manasseh did. After the death of Amon, Josiah began
to reign and he was a good king. (2 Ki 21:26 KJV) And he was
buried in his sepulchre in the garden of Uzza: and Josiah his son reigned in
his stead. It was under his reign that the repairs of
the temple were done and they found the book of the law and brought it to
the King. He rent his clothes because he knew that Judah had forsaken the
God of their Fathers. He instituted reforms.
