Affected Teaching
The word “all” is the Greek word “holon” which carries
with it the meaning of “whole, entire, or complete.” By using the word “all” the
King James Bible is correctly stating that all the events leading up to this
point was prophesied by the prophet Zechariah. However, Zechariah only states
the culmination of these several events while we are given the details by
Matthew of how the colt was procured. Zechariah 9:9 (KJV) Rejoice greatly, O
daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto
thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon
a colt the foal of an ass. So the word “all” conveys the series of
events in procuring the colt plus the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. By the
modern versions omitting “all,” it makes it sound like only the last command was
done to fulfill what the prophet spoke of. The Old Testament prophets many times
prophesied events which would take place in the life of Christ but details are
not given till the actual events are recorded in the New Testament, such as in
this case.
